These dedicated groups support Americanism and Children and Youth programs in nearly every state, with new chapters forming regularly. As one of the fastest-growing and most visible initiatives within The American Legion, the American Legion Riders represent a diverse community united by a common cause.

What Do American Legion Riders Do?

The activities of the American Legion Riders are extensive and varied, making it impossible to list them all here. However, here are some noteworthy examples of their remarkable contributions:

Generous Fundraising: American Legion Riders Chapters and Districts have become some of the most generous donors to the American Legacy Scholarship Fund, often raising $5,000 or more in a single event. Their fundraising efforts play a crucial role in supporting the education of children whose parents have served in the military.

Charity Events: Across the nation, Legion Riders sponsor and participate in various charity events to support their sponsoring American Legion Post. They raise funds for local organizations, including VA Hospitals, Battered Women and Children’s Centers, and programs for needy families. Their commitment to community service is evident in their advocacy for a wide range of causes, from educational initiatives to veterans’ relief efforts.

Patriot Guard Movement: The American Legion Riders are also the founders of the national Patriot Guard movement, which honors and protects the sanctity of military funerals and memorial services. This initiative reflects their deep respect for those who have served and the importance of commemorating their lives.

Honor Guards and Ceremonial Teams: In addition to their community support, Legion Riders have established special motorcycle Honor Guards and ceremonial teams. These groups highlight the special bonds formed through military service and the motorcycling community, creating a unique atmosphere of camaraderie and respect.

Safety Education: Legion Riders are committed to promoting motorcycle and driver safety within their communities and schools. They collaborate with organizations like ABATE and other national motorcycling groups to provide valuable training and resources, ensuring safer riding practices for all.
