On September 4, during a visit to Washington state, National Commander Dan K. Wiley traveled to Bainbridge Island, along with his aide Doug Hensley, our Washington State Department Commander Al Jensen, and our Department Adjutant Barb Lombrano. The group assembled at Colin Hyde Post 172 Legion Hall to meet our members and to tour our Hall, which showcased our Bud Hawk Memorial Park, a memorabilia display curated by member Mick Hersey, along with our original oil painting of Franklin D’Olier, the first National Commander of the American Legion from 1919-1920. The painting was donated to our Post by D’Olier’s grandson, Frank Stowell-D’Olier, who was also at the event and gave an inspiring speech about his grandfather’s legacy. Commander Wiley enjoyed meeting our Legion Family members including our Auxiliary and SAL squadron representatives.
Afterwards, a fantastic luncheon featuring Northwest flavors was enjoyed by over 50 Post 172 members and guests, including Bainbridge Island City officials, our Police and Fire Department representatives, and other local Third District Legionnaires. Commander Wiley gave brief remarks highlighting his priorities including American Legion’s “Be the One” mission to prevent veteran suicide, and “Better Together” which highlights the American Legion Family working and supporting each other. During their visit, Commander Wiley and his entourage also toured the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. We are very proud to have been chosen to host this special event, considering there are over 12,000 Legion Posts worldwide. Thank you to all who helped make this event a success!
