A Deeply Humbling Honor: My Induction into ANAVICUS at the American Legion 2026 Washington Conference
By: Rafael A. Munoz-Cintron, NEC

I still find it hard to put into words just how profoundly humbled I was to be inducted into ANAVICUS (Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans in Canada United States) during the 2026 American Legion Washington Conference. This invitation-only organization, with only about 1,200 members drawn from past national commanders and other truly distinguished Legionnaires, represents the highest level of recognition one can receive in our Legion family.

As a unit of the historic ANAVETS – dating back to 1840 – ANAVICUS builds lasting bonds of friendship and shared purpose between American and Canadian veterans. Membership isn’t something anyone seeks out; it’s extended quietly, by invitation, to those whose service and contributions have quietly spoken for themselves over the years. To have my name called among such an elite group felt surreal and undeserved in the best possible way.

The Washington Conference is always a powerful time – gathering in our nation’s capital to advocate for veterans, meet with lawmakers, attend commission sessions, and hear from leaders like our National Commander. Amid all that important work, the induction ceremony was a quiet, tradition-rich moment that brought everything into focus. Being welcomed by the National Commander, alongside representatives from our Canadian allies, and receiving the royal purple beret, lapel pin, and medal left me overwhelmed with gratitude rather than pride.

I won’t wear that distinctive purple garrison cap as a badge of personal accomplishment – it’s a reminder of the incredible debt I owe to so many others: the fellow veterans who’ve mentored me, the Legionnaires who’ve supported our shared mission, and the countless service members whose sacrifices make all of this possible. This honor belongs as much to them as to me.

If anything, being part of ANAVICUS now carries a greater sense of responsibility – to live up to the example set by those who came before, to continue serving with humility, and to strengthen the ties that unite veterans across borders. I am forever thankful for this unexpected privilege, and I carry it with a heart full of appreciation rather than any sense of having earned it alone.

To my brothers and sisters in The American Legion, to our Canadian comrades, and to every veteran who’s ever answered the call: thank you. This moment at the 2026 Washington Conference will always remind me how much more there is to do, and how fortunate I am to be part of it.
