NEC Resolution 6
The year 2025 marks a monumental milestone in the history of the United States, as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of three of its most revered and foundational military branches: the Army, the Marine Corps, and the Navy. These anniversaries are not merely occasions for historical reflection; they are vital opportunities to honor the enduring legacies, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in defense of our Nation.
As such, the National Executive Committee during its 2025 Spring Conference approved Resolution Number 6 which establishes that: The American Legion, at every level of the organization, actively participate and promote semiquincentennial observances of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Navy, working closely with military installations, schools, government offices, churches, the media and others to build awareness, sharing personal accounts of service, displaying historical artifacts and other items of interest and encouraging veterans to submit their stories on why they joined these branches of service on the national legiontown.org web platform.
A Legacy Forged in Revolution
The Second Continental Congress’s pivotal acts included establishing the Continental Army on June 14, 1775, the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775, and the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775. These nascent forces, born out of the necessity to secure American independence, laid the groundwork for the formidable and multifaceted military that safeguards the United States today. Celebrating these 250th anniversaries allows us to connect with the very origins of our Nation’s defense and to appreciate the courage and resolve of those early patriots.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
Across two and a half centuries, countless individuals have answered the call to duty, embodying the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. From the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to the far reaches of the globe in modern conflicts and humanitarian missions, the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy have been at the forefront of defending American ideals and interests. These anniversaries provide a crucial platform to acknowledge the profound sacrifices made by service members and their families, both past and present. By celebrating their contributions, we demonstrate our gratitude and ensure that their service is never forgotten.
Educating and Inspiring Future Generations
These significant anniversaries offer a unique opportunity to educate the American public, particularly younger generations, about the rich history and vital roles of these military branches. Commemorative events, educational initiatives, and community outreach programs can bring to life the stories of bravery, innovation, and resilience that define the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy. By fostering a deeper understanding of their heritage, we can inspire a new generation to consider service and to appreciate the importance of a strong national defense.
Strengthening Bonds and Communities
The celebrations surrounding the 250th anniversaries serve as powerful unifying forces, bringing together active-duty personnel, veterans, families, and the wider community. Events planned across the Nation will foster a sense of pride and connection, reinforcing the bond between the military and the citizens they serve. These commemorations provide opportunities for dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect, strengthening the social fabric of our Nation. They also provide an excellent opportunity to inform our communities of the great work The American Legion does across all levels on behalf of our community, state and Nation.
Looking to the Future
While honoring the past, these anniversaries also provide a moment to look towards the future. The Army, Marine Corps, and Navy continue to evolve, adapting to new challenges and technological advancements to maintain their readiness and effectiveness. Celebrating their 250th birthdays underscores the enduring importance of a strong and capable military in safeguarding peace and security in an ever-changing world.
The semiquincentennial anniversary of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Navy in 2025 are of paramount importance. They are opportunities to honor the sacrifices of generations of service members, to educate and inspire future generations, to strengthen community bonds, and to reaffirm the enduring vital role of these branches in the defense of the Nation. As the United States reflects on its history and looks to its future, these celebrations will serve as a powerful reminder of the dedication and valor that have shaped our Nation and how for the past 106 years The American Legion and its members have been an integral part of said dedication and valor. This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate our fellow citizens the continuous work and devotion not only to our fellow comrades, but to our communities as a whole as we celebrate by living every day our motto: Veterans Strengthening America.
