The Department Constitutional Speech Contest took place March 28-29, 2025, at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake. This annual event showcases the remarkable talents of young orators and provides them with a platform to express their ideas and perspectives.

The weekend commenced on Friday evening with a staff briefing/training session at 5:30 PM, where the volunteer staff all gathered to ensure everything was in order for the upcoming contests. This was followed by a contestant briefing at 8:00 PM, where participants received information about the contest format and guidelines.

On Saturday morning, the excitement built as 15 contestants took the stage in the two semi-final contests. Participants delivered compelling speeches on aspects of the US Constitution, demonstrating their public speaking skills and the passion behind their topics. After intense competition, the top two contestants from each semi-final round advanced to the Department Finals contest held in the afternoon.

The highlight of the event was the announcement of the 2025 Department Champion, Mary Crosby, who not only impressed the judges but also earned the opportunity to represent the Department of Washington at the National Oratorical Finals contest in Hillsdale, Michigan, this coming May.

The competition was fierce, and the four finalists were recognized for their outstanding performances:

  • Mary Crosby – $2000 scholarship (Sponsored by Post 91 in Burlington)
  • Cassandra Brinlee – $1500 scholarship (Sponsored by Post 94 in Lacey)
  • Natali James – $1000 scholarship (Sponsored by Post 122 in Washougal)
  • Ruth Ann Acheson – $500 scholarship (Sponsored by Post/Riders 47 in Colville)

Organizing an event of this magnitude requires the participation of many individuals. A total of 18 staff members and 18 judges contributed their time and expertise to ensure the contest ran smoothly. Their hard work and commitment to supporting these young orators made this event a success and provided invaluable experiences for all participants. A huge THANK YOU to you all for giving of your time and talents.

All in all, it was an amazing event and we celebrate not only the achievements of our contestants but also the community spirit that makes events like this possible. Congratulations again to all participants and especially to our winners!
