Service Division

The American Legion Department of Washington Professional Service Officers are an important and vital link in THE AMERICAN LEGION’S nationwide network of volunteer and professional Service Officers.

Service Officers advise and assist veterans and other claimants in the preparation of basic VA forms and develop support documentation for such claims.

It is the responsibility of the Department Service Officers to be familiar with and proficient in VA laws and regulations. They must follow the policies and guidelines established by the Department of Washington as outlined in the VA & R Code of Procedures.

The term “Department Service Officer” (DSO) includes all AMERICAN LEGION professional service officer employees of a Department or a State Veterans agency. The Department Service Officers are located in Seattle, American Lake, Spokane, Retsil Service Center, JBLM, and all Community Base Outreach Clinics.

img_621The American Legion Claims Coach App

The American Legion’s Claims Coach app is featured in a story on
The app, available for both iPhone and Android users, provides step-by-step guidance to help veterans and their families connect with a service officer and navigate the VA claims process.

The free app features a nationwide directory of accredited American Legion service officers, a built-in organizer for appointments, documents and deadlines, and a wealth of other resources. Additionally, a personal secure file called “My Checklist” keeps everything in order, from the initial meeting with a service officer through VA’s decision and appeal, if necessary.
The app does not replace personal contact with service officers; it helps streamline the filing process and helps veterans make the most of time with their service officers.
